About Dr. Greenwood
Clarinetist
Hi! I’m Dr. Maggie Greenwood, but you can call me Dr. G. I’ve been playing clarinet since I was 11 years old and picked it because we happened to have my mom’s old one in a closet. I thought for a minute that I might pick trumpet instead since that’s what my grandma played, but clarinet won in the end. As it turns out, I love the clarinet! It makes such a fun range of sounds from beautiful melodies to crazy squeals, and I have so much fun playing with all of the options it has to offer.
My life has been so cool because I chose to teach and play music. I grew up in a small farm town in rural Missouri, and the clarinet is what gave me the chance to travel all over the world. I love seeing all the ways people play clarinet in different parts of the world, and even more, I love bringing those experiences home to tell my students about. Right now, I teach band kids starting in 6th grade all the way through high school students. I also teach private lessons and coach clarinet sections in local youth bands and orchestras. I used to be a college professor, but I decided a few years ago that I like teaching younger kids better. But my life isn’t just about teaching; I also perform! I’ve played in bands and orchestras, brass bands and musical theatre pits, solo recitals and special events for people. Music is the way I connect best with other people, and playing with my friends for other people is my absolute favorite thing in the world.
When I’m not teaching music and playing clarinet, I spend a lot of time taking care of my plant army. The last time I counted them, I think I had over 50! I love putting on a podcast or audiobook and spending the evening seeing what my plants need. I live in Colorado now, and we’ve got lots of beautiful trails to hike, so I do that too when I’ve got time.
