Our Story

My name is Anoushka Divekar (she/her), and the first time I played a piece of music for solo clarinet by a woman of color was ten years into playing clarinet! I didn't want other students to not see themselves represented in the early years, so I decided to write a book for first year learners that featured living and historically marginalized composers, and that was based in culturally relevant pedagogy and Universal Design for Learning. Meet The Composers and Clarinetists!

Thank You!!!

Thank You!

This project would not have been possible without many people. First, to all my teachers, piano, violin, clarinet, dance, all of you through the years have been complete inspirations to me. I'd like to specifically thanks those who have been an instrumental part of my clarinet journey, Dr. Christine Bellomy, Mr. Daniel Silver, Dr. David Shea, and Mr. Gábor Varga.

I’m deeply indebted to my mentors for this project. Dr. Amanda Draper, my research director, read my document many times late at night and on weekends, and helped me understand how to navigate the writing and music making process. This document would not exist without her. Thank you to Mr. Gábor Varga, my primary teacher and committee chair, who has transformed my playing over the last three years; I do not even recognize it. Thank you to my committee members, Ms. Linda Strommen and Dr. Otis Murphy, who were essential in the pursuit of my document. Thank you to Naomi from the writing center for teaching me all about APA and tables. I cannot begin to express my thanks to Alain Barker, and the generous support of the IU Jacobs School of Music Innovation Competition and the Office of Entrepreneurship & Career Development that allowed this project to come to fruition.

Thank you to Claire Gunsbury, website designer extraordinaire (you really saved me), Maddy Newhouse, the official Clarinet Chronicles photographer, Hannah Femino for the beautiful cover art, my sister, Amruta Divekar, my technology teacher and backing track creator, and my husband Nadav Kohen for so many things, but specifically for proofreading and being a live-in extra pair of eyes, and IT support. Thank you to my friends and family for unending support.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to the composers and clarinetists who collaborated with me on this project, it would be nothing without the artists that shared their passions. Clarinet Chronicles features the work of thirty-four people who wrote, drew, designed, played, and composed. I know that the music and art you all have brought to life will be as inspiring to my students as it is to me.
